Halloween Costume Safety Tips for Cyclists and Pedestrians

Halloween is a fun time for people of all ages, but it’s important to stay safe while celebrating. This is especially true for cyclists and pedestrians, who are more vulnerable to accidents on Halloween night due to increased pedestrian traffic and drivers who may be distracted by costumes.

Here are some Halloween safety tips for drivers and pedestrians:

Costume Safety

  • Choose a costume that is safe and visible.
  • Avoid costumes that are too long or baggy, as they can get caught in your bike chain or make it difficult to walk.
  • Avoid costumes that restrict your vision or hearing. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
  • Add reflective tape or lights to your costume. If your costume is not very reflective, these will help drivers see you. You can also wear a headlamp or flashlight when walking or biking at night.

Pedestrian Safety

  • Always look both ways before crossing the street and obey all traffic laws. Cross only at street corners and crosswalks.
  • Do not run across the street.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
  • Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

Driver Safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings and other road users. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
  • Get rid of any distractions – like your phone – in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
  • Be extra careful on Halloween night when there is more pedestrian traffic, and drivers may be distracted by costumes.
  • While it might seem like the best day to snap pictures and see what everyone else is up to on this fun day, distracted walking (and driving!), such as talking on the phone and texting, increases your risk of an incident occurring.

By following these tips, you can help stay safe on Halloween night and enjoy all the festivities without a truly scary situation occurring.
